A quick news flash about my upcoming, 2-day "Suspense Regardless of Genre" class, Nov 4 & 11, (plus cartoon at the bottom)
You might be surprised to see me in your inbox again, but this is just a brief newsflash that 49 Writers is keeping the doors open for last-minute registrants to my class that beings this Saturday, Nov 4 (1-4 Alaska time, 2-5 Pacific) and continues the following Saturday, Nov 11, at the same time.
We have a very good group already assembled—I see some names I recognize!—but a couple more folks will fit, if you’re feeling spontaneous. Brief readings will include excerpts by Maggie O’Farrell, Fiona Barton, Danya Kukafka, and Alice LaPlante. On the second Saturday, we will be workshopping 3-page submissions. This class is intended for both fiction and nonfiction writers—anyone interested in the concepts of suspense or tension as they relate to all compelling writing.

Master the Element of Suspense (Regardless of Genre)
with Andromeda Romano-Lax
Details: This virtual class will include 2 sessions on Saturday, November 4, and Saturday, November 11, both 1-4pm (ALASKA time)
Description: Suspense is not just a genre or bookstore category, it’s the element that makes the reader want to turn the page in any book, whether fiction or memoir, in order to find out what will happen or be revealed next. In this class, we will look at four types of suspenseful situations in fiction and creative nonfiction, examine the role of emotions and uncertainty, brainstorm premises, and discover how suspense operates through story as well as how it operates through structure. In our first week, we’ll practice the skill of close reading by analyzing published novel and memoir excerpts. In our second week, we’ll workshop brief excerpts (max 4 pages) from participant manuscripts, using guided prompts.
This class is appropriate for all genres and all levels of experience. Beginners welcome!
